Pope to Bishops: Stay out of politics!

Pope: Stay out of politics

POPE Benedict yesterday decried the growing gap between rich and poor in Latin America but told priests to stay out of politics even as they fought for social justice.

He also urged Latin American bishops to do more to confront challenges threatening the Roman Catholic Church, including the defection of millions of followers to Protestant churches.

His call came at the end of a five-day visit to Brazil, 500 years after priests stood alongside the first Spanish and Portuguese explorers.

The Pope earlier led about 150,000 people — far fewer than the 500,000 expected — in a traditional mass outside the huge Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida in the holy shrine city.

But the Pope’s last major speech before leaving may prove to be controversial. He said indigenous peoples welcomed the arrival of European priests because they were "silently longingQuote
